I recently had a conversation with a scaffold business owner who said that he has seen a few cases recently where, scaffold wall ties were “causing inconvenience” so someone used an angle grinder to cut them off. Safety devices such as Scaffshield are a good preventative safety device, but if a reckless person on site decides to cut off a tube or handrail, then they are going perform a very unsafe act. Needless to say, active wall ties and handrails should never be removed.
Jordy Adhead who was the Victorian chairman at Scaffolding Association Australia (SAA) has mentioned that after a survey of 5000 industry workers, 95% witnessed or performed scaffold tampering. Let’s all strive to make a change. I would like to commend Scaffolding Association Australia (SAA) for the 3 month safety campaign to promote safe work practices to prevent injury or death in the workplace.

Here are just a few high-profile incidents that highlight the constant attention that is needed for improved safety measures. In 2012, scaffolding collapsed in Prahran, crushing cars and injuring people. Nearby at North Melbourne, a few years later, strong wind toppled a facade wall; killing and injuring members of the public. Then also in 2019, apprentice Christopher Cassaniti lost his life on-site after yet another breach of workplace safety. Christopher had only just turned 18 years old 4 days prior. These and many stories should not need to be told.

Court cases resulting from incidents like these reveal poor work practices: – width of platforms reduced – wall ties removed – overloading of scaffolding structure Practices found, such as stacking of bricks up to three times the safe limit in scaffold bays, is obviously not compliant with Australian standards. Never allow any unauthorised person to tamper or modify scaffold.
